The story, briefly

At 15, Kai was diagnosed with a rare spinal AVM and told he'd likely never walk again. Four months out of hospital, he won his first International Para Surfing Competition in Hawaii. Three consecutive AASP World Titles followed — and through years of consistent rehab, he has regained the ability to walk with crutches.
